Y6 English Lesson Plan: Junior Journalists

Teacher notes
Show pupils the example of the Guinness World Records
report on Preet Chandi, using the link on slide 5 to the
Guinness World Records website.
Use slides 7, 8, 9 and 10, looking at extracts from the
article on Preet, to encourage pupils to spot features
evident in journalistic writing. Particular elements you
should try and draw out are:
Exciting vocabulary and emphasis of some words
(e.g., whopping and alone)
Expanded noun phrases (to convey information
concisely)
Passive verbs (e.g., 8Preet9s route was divided9)
Relative clauses and parentheses to provide
additional information
Various sentence lengths and sentence starters,
including fronted adverbials
Paragraph starters to link build cohesion across
paragraphs
Organisational devices:
Headings
Subheadings
Varying paragraph lengths
Third person
Direct speech (quotes), which may include opinions
Facts, figures and dates
A supporting adult in
class might work with
individuals or a group at
their desk, highlighting
and annotating some of
these features on the
Polar Preet Article.
Pupils can work in pairs to highlight the features and
annotate their Polar Preet Articles as you work through
the features as a class.

Time for a brain break! Try the physical activities on the
Lesson Presentation and see if you could break a world
record.

Identifying and discussing themes and conventions in
and across a wide range of writing
Distinguish between statements of fact and opinion
Retrieve, record and present information from nonfiction
Explain that the class are now going to get to become
journalists and learn about Dave Walsh in order to gather
information about him to put into a report.
