Words using 8able9 and 8ably9
Diminutives using 8micro9 and 8mini9 prefixes
Begin the lesson with a speed round spelling starter.

Explain that the pupils will be practising some spellings
that have the diminutive prefixes 8micro-9 and 8mini-9, and
the suffixes 8able9 and 8ably9. Explain the meaning of
diminutive: a prefix that makes something small.
Spellings to read out include the following:
microphone, microbe, microscope, microwave
minibus, miniskirt, minibeast, minicab
understandable, reasonable, noticeable, comfortable
understandably, reasonably, noticeably, comfortably

Consider mixing the
spellings up, or keeping
them in their individual
prefix boxes, depending
on the needs of your
cohort.
You might ask pupils to
include each word in a
sentence.
Introduce the lesson and learning objectives. Tell the
class that they will be learning about two remarkable
individuals, Preet Chandi and Dave Walsh – finding out
about what they did and how they did it.
First up is Polar Preet! Share the video to meet Preet
Chandi to learn all about her background and her world
record achievement.
