No. 1 is our characterful charmer in the heart of the kingly-and-queenly city.
The hotel itself is a Grade II Listed Regency townhouse of grand, stately proportions and head-turningly
good looks. Dark in colour but by no means subtle, the hotel has a distinct shine to its exterior, with a
Virginia creeper around the grand entrance.
The characterful charm continues inside, where you’ll find sweeping sash windows, higher-than-high
ceilings and our grand staircase, which is the subject of many-a-photo. There are 38 bedrooms and
suites here, all of which have a familiar feeling to each other. The rooms are grand-but-friendly and
very comforting, many have fireplaces, lots have leafy views and all with locally-sourced curios that tell
York’s stories in the most charming of ways. You’ll find White Roses of York on many of the walls in the
bedrooms at No. 1. The White Rose of York was originally adopted as a heraldic badge of the royal House
of York. Now, it’s used more broadly as a symbol of Yorkshire. Dotted around our bedrooms, it’s just
another subtle touch that winks to the city we’re in, which we adore.
The Spa at No. 1 is nestled away on our lower ground floor where local lavender, tailored massages and
personalised facials bring deep-sigh relaxation in our historic spa treatment rooms. Time in the Spa at
No. 1 really is good for the soul.
Just off the hotel, you’ll find Pearly Cow, which celebrates the very best of land and sea. Everything that
hails from the Dales, surrounding coastline and beyond. You can expect delicious dishes served over fire
and ice, Sunday Roasts with all the trimmings, our take on the classic: Afternoon Sea, and much more.

After dining in Pearly Cow, we recommend heading to The Rhubarb Bar at No. 1. There are signature
cocktails that transport you to the fireside after a wintry walk in the Dales. And the local honey so
