York is known for being sweet.
The city was once home to Rowntree
and Terry’s (the confectioners) and is
still home now to the Nestlé factory!
Keep an eye out around the city for
confectionery-inspired names of
parks and avenues, like Rowntree
Park, which was a gift from
Messrs Rowntree & Co.

Walled, but not walled in
The star of the show in York has to be York Minster, one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals. The 13th century Gothic cathedral still boasts medieval
stained glass and two bell towers. It simply cannot be missed. Literally! The Minster has attracted people from all over the world for more than 1000 years and
still offers a number of services and events each day. The culture of the city continues with a wealth of museums and galleries to explore.
If you’re looking for a souvenir or to do some shopping while in York, you won’t struggle to find somewhere special. York’s cobbled streets and winding
‘Snickelways’ are lined with independent shops where you’ll find all sorts of eccentricities and fancies. The Shambles is famous for it. Made up of 13th century
timbered streets, its shops are sure to make you say, ‘Ooh I’ll just pop in’ as some new curio catches your eye in the window. We recommend a trip to The York
Ghost Merchants, where you’ll be able to buy your own unique York Ghost and take a special part of the city’s culture home with you. The ancient city is known
for being the most haunted city in Europe, perhaps even the world! During your strolls you’ll be sure to overhear a ghost tour or two taking place. They’re ideal
for anyone seeking something a bit spookier from their trip to the ancient city. Give a ghost tour a go… If you’re brave enough!
With all that said, York is so much more than just what’s within the walls (in case that wasn’t enough!). Here, you’ll also find one of the best race courses in
the country, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors and Wolds right on the doorstep and all ideal for winter walks. Whenever you choose to visit, there’s also
plenty happening, with events in the city every day and inspiring festivals every month of the year.
