Padel in Marbella
Fun, fast-paced, sexy and sociable, it’s hard to think of
a sport that embodies the essence of Marbella more
perfectly than padel.
With all the finesse of tennis, the intensity of squash and
a social scene off-court that equals if not surpasses its
aerobic impact, paddle tennis, or padel as its known
here, is more popular than ever.
Originally created in Mexico, padel is now one of the
most popular sports in Spain. Interestingly, it was
Mexican Enrique Corcuera who first came up with
padel in 1969 when he made some alterations to his
personal squash court. His Spanish friend, Alfonso de
Hohenlohe-Langenburg, saw the sport, liked it, and
brought it back to Spain, where, in 1974, the first padel
courts in Spain were built in… you guessed it, Marbella.
With rules similar to those of tennis, it’s usually played
in pairs, making it a very social activity. But as well
as being great fun, it also provides a very effective
workout, with a list of physical and mental benefits
that include reducing stress, strengthening your heart,
toning muscles and improved coordination.
Widely considered the birthplace of modern day padel,
Marbella is, unsurprisingly, impossible to beat when
it comes to offering the finest installations and, most
importantly, the perfect weather, to get the most out
of this sport.
With some incredible venues to enjoy a game of padel,
including The Royal Padel Club, Nueva Alcántara Padel,
Los Monteros Racket Club, Puente Romano Tennis Club
and Royal Tennis Club Marbella, you will find that, no
matter whether you’re a beginner or a pro, the friendly
professional teams at these premium clubs are on
hand to help and encourage you.
Marbella hosts over 20 federation tournaments each
year, across several categories. In fact, the World Tour
Padel Masters came to Marbella in May 2023 and, this
year, the city will proudly host the Femme Open at Villa
Padierna Racquet Club on May 25th, 2024.
