Alannah Vellacott, a Grand Bahama Brand
Ambassador, is a marine researcher, conservationist,
science communicator, and freediver whose deep
commitment to the natural environment of the island
is evident in both her professional work and personal
passion. She has dedicated much of her life to
preserving the rich biodiversity of Grand Bahama,
particularly its vibrant marine life, and educating
others about the importance of conservation. As a
freediver, Alannah is able to experience the island’s
underwater ecosystems firsthand, and she shares
these awe-inspiring moments with others to inspire a
greater appreciation for the island’s natural beauty.
What Alannah loves most about Grand Bahama is its
unique blend of community and modern amenities. "It
has an out-island charm and an out-island feel," she
explains. The island's close-knit community offers a
comforting sense of familiarity, where everyone knows
each other and looks out for one another. For
Alannah, this creates a feeling of safety and peace. "I
can feel safe going to bed at night," she says,
highlighting the tranquility that Grand Bahama offers.
Despite the island's laid-back atmosphere, it also
provides the conveniences of modern life. Alannah
enjoys the best of both worlds: the ability to unwind in
a quiet, serene environment while still having access
to luxury, like visiting the spa or dining at high-end
restaurants. "I can be in the middle of a big party one
day and then be the only person on the beach the
next," she reflects. This balance of social activity and
solitude is something that sets Grand Bahama apart
for Alannah.
As someone who was born and raised on the island,
Alannah has a deep affection for Grand Bahama,
which she considers an essential part of her identity.
Being a Grand Bahama Brand Ambassador feels
especially meaningful because she gets to represent
the island she calls home. Alannah has witnessed the
island’s growth and changes over the years and has
seen the potential it holds. Although some aspects of
Grand Bahama have slowed down, she remains
optimistic about its future. "The people here still have
that energy, and when resources do return to the
island, it’s going to be just the same as it was, or even
better," she says. Her passion for Grand Bahama is
evident in her desire to remind others that the island’s
vibrant spirit is still alive and well.
Alannah’s ideal weekend on Grand Bahama is a
perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, taking full
advantage of the island’s natural beauty. Living right
on the water, she finds herself drawn to the outdoors,
whether it's fishing, spearfishing, or paddleboarding in
the mangroves. "I can go fishing off the rocks
somewhere out west or spearfishing off the south
side," she explains. She enjoys the freedom to choose
her activities, curating her weekend based on her
mood and the weather.
When showing friends around the island, Alannah
takes them to places that showcase the best of
Grand Bahama’s natural wonders and vibrant social
scene. "As soon as they touch down, I have a Sands
beer in the car," she jokes. If they’re hungry, they’re
sure to enjoy fresh seafood at one of Alannah’s
favorite spots, like Out Da Sea Restaurant, where she
loves the grilled fish. "It’s just the fish with onions,
sweet pepper, and lime juice, grilled in foil, and it’s
just so good," she says with enthusiasm.
Alannah also enjoys taking her friends on more
adventurous excursions to some of Grand Bahama’s
hidden gems. One of her favorite spots is Owl's Hole,
a thrilling jump that remains exciting even after
multiple visits. "The jump does not get any easier," she
laughs, recognizing the adrenaline rush it provides.
Alannah also loves walking the horse trails, a peaceful
activity where she can connect with nature while
learning about the plants from knowledgeable guides.
For water activities, she enjoys paddleboarding in
Dover Sound or going on snorkel tours in the Lucaya
National Park. These spots allow her to enjoy the
island's beauty in a tranquil, uncrowded environment.
She also recommends Terry's Conch Stand at the Fish
Fry in Smith’s Point, another local favorite known for
its great food and laid-back atmosphere.
