For over two decades, Ernestine McPhee has
opened her heart and home to travelers through
the People-to-People program, which connects
domestic and international visitors with
residents. As a recently retired primary school
teacher with over 40 years of dedication to
education, Ernestine has seamlessly transitioned
into her role as a cultural ambassador, enriching
the lives of visitors from near and far.
A passionate collector of international teapots
and an avid traveler herself, Ernestine's
enthusiasm for global exploration knows no
bounds. Since retiring from teaching, she has
fully embraced her love of seeing the world,
immersing herself in new cultures and forging
connections that transcend borders.
"I like meeting people because I like traveling,"
Ernestine explains. "I've hosted many people over
the years, and I've been over to visit people who
I've hosted." Her genuine curiosity and eagerness
to learn about different cultures have led her to
form lasting friendships with individuals from all
corners of the globe.

One such memorable encounter was with Allie
Dunnington, a balloon pilot from the UK, and her
friend Monique Hoogeslag from Holland.
Ernestine recalls being fascinated by Allie and
Monique's stories, having experienced hot air
ballooning herself while in Turkey. Welcoming
them into her home, Ernestine treated her guests
to a taste of Bahamian hospitality, sharing
stories, laughter, and, of course, a delicious
home-cooked meal.
For Ernestine, being a People-to-People host is
about fostering genuine connections and
creating meaningful experiences with others.
