Grand Life Magazine Summer 23 - Flipbook - Page 55
Warm summer days and long summer nights can often feel magical - like anything can happen. And,
summers on Grand Bahama are a time when the island comes alive. In addition to the upcoming Bahamas
50th Independence celebrations and the Goombay Summer Festival (which takes place every Thursday in
July), here are 10 unique things to do, see, eat and experience on Grand Bahama.
Try A Uniquely Grand Bahamian Dish - Grand Bahama is the only island that you can find pickled conch
salad. Head on down to West End for a bowl of this spicy blend at Shabbo’s & Sherry’s. While in West End,
also be sure to try a whole fried lobster served with a side of fluffy guava or coconut panny cakes. Grand
Bahama also has a wide selection of restaurants around the entire island that range from fine dining to
casual Bahamian dishes.
Visit An Authentic Fish Fry - The Smith’s Point Fish Fry celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2023, and is
perhaps the oldest Fish Fry in the entire Bahamas. The Fish Fry takes place each Wednesday in the coastal
settlement of Smith’s Point and features authentic Bahamian food, music, dancing and cocktails like Gully
Wash.
Enjoy An Eco-Tour - Grand Bahama is an Eco-Wonderland. While on island, you can experience kayaking in
the mangroves, visiting cave systems or diving in Owl’s Hole. You can also visit Grand Bahamas’s national
parks and the Garden of the Groves.
Learn More About Stingrays - Stingrays are often misunderstood, but the West End Ecology Tour is
committed to debunking myths about these gentle animals.
Visit 44 Beaches - Grand Bahama has 44 named beaches, so feel free to visit as many of them as you can.
Go Bonefishing - There is a reason Grand Bahama is known for its stellar bonefishing. The waters around
the island are relatively untouched and crystal clear.
Get Wet - On Grand Bahama, you can go diving, snorkeling, visit shipwrecks, swim with sharks and have fun
with a wide range of water activities.
Visit a Brewery - You can get the Sands experience by visiting the Bahamian Brewery before stopping into
their Tap Room to try a selection of their Grand Bahama brews.
Get A Hole In One - If you enjoy relaxing with a round of golf, Grand Bahama has got you covered.
Visit the Port Lucaya Marketplace - Port Lucaya is a perfect place for a bit of shopping and is the home
of Bootleg Chocolates, the Bahamas Maritime Museum, and a number of restaurants and bars.
