THE GARDEN OF THE GROVES
A treasure trove of natural beauty, the Garden of the Groves is a beloved attraction for tourists
visiting the shores of Grand Bahama as well as locals enraptured by the 12-acre botanical center
tucked away in the east on Magellan and Midshipman Drive.
The garden features a vast array of Bahamian flora boasting of over 10,000 species of plant life as
well as cascading waterfalls, a wildlife habitat for indigenous and migratory birds, a butterfly
garden, a consecrated chapel on the hill, prayer and meditation labyrinth, artisan village, children’s
playground and the Garden Café & Bar.
Proudly heralded as the founder of the City of Freeport, Wallace Groves a native of Norfolk, Virginia
and his wife Georgette established the Garden of the Groves 50 years ago on March 3rd, 1973.
Today, according to Garden of the Groves Park Manager Marilyn Laing, the garden stands as a
testament to Groves’ genius in the creation of the city, which also has his signature intricately
woven in the historical fabric of Grand Bahama. In honor of the Garden of the Groves’ golden
jubilee several events are planned to celebrate the joyous milestone inclusive of a 50-couple Vow
Renewal Ceremony that is slated to occur in the fall.
