Street counts and estimates show that Canterbury
had 24 people who were sleeping rough on a single night
in autumn 2020.12 This is the largest number in Kent and
accounts for 23.8% of the Kent total.13 The issue of
homelessness in Canterbury is linked to lack of
affordable housing, exacerbated by being a student
city with student rents pushing up the market and
making rents unaffordable for families and individuals
experiencing poverty.
