SEVENOAKS
Sevenoaks is to the west of Kent and covers an area
known as the Metropolitan Green belt. The Sevenoaks
district is perceived to be affluent but this perception
masks local pockets of urban and rural deprivation.
Within Sevenoaks, Swanley St Mary’s ward falls within
the 10% most deprived wards in Kent and the Southeast.
6% of children under 16 (2,465) live in low-income
families in receipt of Child Tax Credit where rural
deprivation is more isolating than poverty in the towns.
Most children living in poverty (73.9%) live in lone parent
families (IMD. 2019).

DEMOGRAPHICS
PRIORITY AREAS OF NEED
Resident population of 121,400.
1. Support in the community for children and young
people with SEN
Sevenoaks has the highest percentage of young people
with Special Educational Needs with an Education
and Health Care Plan (5%) and the highest number of
children and young people with physical disability across
Kent and Medway.129 This is a significantly high number
compared with other districts and proportionally even
higher when gauged against the population size. There
are several special schools in Sevenoaks and across
west Kent which may explain the higher numbers of
resident young people with SEN and physical disability.
Sevenoaks has the highest proportion of children in
relative low-income families living with a lone parent.130
As SEN and disability can be the cause of a lot of
relationship break-ups and disability can put pressure
on finances, this may be significant in relation to this
theme.

2. Provision of rural services for the vulnerable to
improve access to services and connection to others
The rural nature of Sevenoaks means that many older
and vulnerable people find it difficult to access key
health services by public transport. Rural areas have
