MEDWAY
Medway is an area to the north of Kent with its own
unitary authority independent of Kent County Council.
Medway has always had its own unique character,
its location shaped by the River Medway and the
relationship between the historic Medway towns
of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, and
Rainham. Located in Medway is Rochester Cathedral,
the second oldest Cathedral in Britain and Chatham
naval dockyard, an outstanding example of industrial
naval might.

1. Support for victims of domestic abuse, stalking
and sexual offences
Indicators show Medway ranks worst in several areas
related to domestic abuse. There were 638 attendances
at the domestic abuse one stop shop in Medway in
2020 which was a 38% rise on the previous year.114 The
one stop shop closed during lockdown and moved to an
online service where numbers rose again. This reflects
the national picture where there was a 61% surge in
calls and contacts during lockdown.115 Domestic abuse
is associated with many health issues, including mental
health issues, alcohol and substance use issues, trauma,
unwanted pregnancy, and sexual health issues.

Children in Need (CIN) who have experienced or
witnessed domestic abuse in Medway has also increased.
CIN episodes with domestic abuse identified as a factor
at assessment was 25.5 per 1,000 0–4-year-olds which is
critically in 92 percentiles of all local authorities.116
