NEW Water: Our History at a Glance - Magazine - Page 27
Earth Day
Thanks to national and international efforts, such as Earth Day, sentiment
throughout America began to change as people better understood their
connection to water and the importance of protecting this vital resource. A lot has
been accomplished, yet more needs to be done to preserve and protect our area
waterways now and for future generations. Our community was honored when
Gaylord Nelson visited GBMSD for the opening ceremony of the upgraded facility.
One of the oldest pipes in the GBMSD system was built in
the 1930s, and runs beneath Quincy Street (not pictured
here). The pipe, also known as an interceptor, has a diameter
of nine feet, almost big enough for a bus to drive through.
Infrastructure is a fundamental component of protecting our
valuable natural resources.
