The Crossing
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the city of Green
Bay and surrounding communities continued to
grow. More homes were being built and industry
was booming. GBMSD met the growing demand
by installing additional sewer pipe to reach new
neighborhoods and support economic growth.
In 1936, GBMSD constructed a new crossing of
the Fox River to accommodate the alignment of the
soon to be constructed Ray Nitschke/Main Street
Bridge. A 140-foot-deep shaft was constructed that
crews used to tunnel under the river.
GBMSD continues to meet the challenges of the
growing demands to support population growth and
economic development. This occurs in tandem with
maintaining the existing system and implementing
new technologies and strategies to achieve costeffective permit compliance while providing
environmentally sound sewage treatment.
