World War II
America was still suffering from the Great
Depression when it formally entered into WWII
in December 1941. America’s war efforts meant
rationing at home, as supplies were shipped
overseas to support the war effort. To aid the effort,
the U.S. Government encouraged Americans to
plant “Victory Gardens” at their private residences
and in local parks.
People throughout the country planted gardens
to grow fruit, vegetables, and herbs to supplement
their food rations.
GBMSD played a key role in this effort as
biosolids, a byproduct of the sewage treatment
process, was cheap to buy and was used as
fertilizer in Victory Gardens throughout the region.
In addition, the District granted leave to several
employees to serve in the military. They were
celebrated and welcomed back following the war.
