Growing Pains
Challenges of Wastewater Treatment
in a Growing Community
Over the decades, community demands for
additional wastewater services have influenced
and informed GBMSD’s role in meeting this
demand.
The original facility and interceptors were built
to solve the “East River pollution problem,” as many
leaders back then deemed it; still today, it remains
a challenge.
An interceptor system was built to move the
wastewater from people’s homes and businesses
to the treatment facility for the cleaning process
to occur.
As GBMSD continued to convey additional
wastewater to accommodate the growing region,
demands on the facility also grew.
