Course Outline
This course offers pupils the opportunity to explore a variety of aspects of the performing arts
industry. Pupils develop practical skills for performance, theoretical knowledge of the performance
disciplines, technical theatre operation and an understanding of the business side of performing arts. All
pupils will be required to perform to an audience and will be expected to sing, dance and act.
The Award gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical
learning environment. The main focus is on four areas of equal importance, which cover the:
•
development of key skills that prove your aptitude in Performing Arts such as reproducing repertoire
or responding to stimuli
•
process that underpins effective ways of working in the Performing Arts, such as development of
ideas, rehearsal and performance
•
attitudes that are considered most important in the Performing Arts, including personal
management and communication
•
knowledge that underpins effective use of skills, process and attitudes in the sector such as roles,
responsibilities, performance disciplines and styles.

•
Pupils MUST PERFORM to a live audience.
•
Candidates contribution may be acting, singing, dancing but there is a heavy focus on Musical
Theatre.
•
Candidates can also study lighting, sound, set, costume, props, and masks.
•
Pupils will be required to commit some of their own time to after college rehearsals as part of some
unit work.
•
There will be some work experience elements to the course which will involve visits to places such as
South Hill Park and backstage experience there. Parents will be contacted directly regarding this
when it becomes relevant.
•
Pupils are encouraged to attend as many theatre trips as possible and to get involved in extracurricular activities at Garth Hill College.
