Board and Syllabus: AQA (8201 - Art and Design (Art, Craft and Design)
Course Outline
The Art and Design course enables candidates to make a personal response to their own experiences,
environment and culture in both their practical and theoretical studies. It also provides opportunities to
develop skills and understanding through practical experience of the role, purpose and function of art in
society.
Component 1: must show evidence of working in areas of study drawn from two or more of the titles below
taking into account the distinguishing characteristics of art, craft and design.

Component 2:
External Assignment: This is an externally set question paper. Students must select and respond to one
starting point from their chosen title.
The exams and non-exam assessment will measure how pupils have achieved the following assessment
objectives.
AO1 – Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources.
AO2 – Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials,
techniques and processes.
AO3 – Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses.
AO4 – Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding
of visual language.
Home learning is a 40-minute task set once a week.
Future Pathways
Further study including A Level.
Career opportunities include designer for interiors, fashion, furniture, ceramics, graphics, film, animation,
magazine, advertising, set and prop for theatre/TV/films, textile designer, jeweller, print maker, sculptor,
painter, ceramicist, art teacher, art therapist.
