that run on anything other than traditional
diesel.
“We believe that you have to use the entire
playing board. This means that we need to use
electric vehicles, but also HVO-powered ones
and trucks that run on biogas, which should
play a greater role in the green transition.”
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is biodiesel made from residual waste from the wood
industry and food waste. Ordinary diesel cars
can run on HVO without problems, emiing
88 per cent less CO₂ than diesel. On the other
hand, HVO is slightly more expensive than
diesel.
Frode Larsen has invested in both biogas vehicles and electric trucks. One of the challenges
with electric vehicles is that the infrastructure
is not yet in place. It lacks cables, substations
and charging options.
“It’s one thing to buy the vehicle, but when
it comes to charging it, things start geing
difficult. Should we have charging stations ourselves? Should we charge out at the customer’s
premises? Or will there be a ‘public charge’
system? There is a big difference between
charging a passenger car that may be stationary
for 23 hours a day and a truck that has to drive
as many hours a day as possible.”
ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES
There are a lot of challenges, but this is nothing
new in Frode Laursen’s 75-year history. Then,
as now, the company is ready to take on the
challenges.
“In terms of implementing the green transition, we’re facing one of the biggest challenges
we’ve seen in the time that I’ve been here. But
we’ve always been good at seeing the opportunities and making the right decisions about the
direction we need to take and investing on this
basis,” says Jan Skov.
