WERNER
THE BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE
Werner Hartmund will never forget Christmas
2014. While on holiday, he got a message that
Frode Laursen would take over Steckhan &
Peters, where he had been working since 1987.
Aer hearing that Thorkil Andersen
and a delegation of other employees from
Frode Laursen would be coming to give an
information meeting, he chose to interrupt
his holiday.
He was a bit nervous about the prospect of
new owners, but that all changed when Thorkil
pulled Werner aside before the meeting and
said:
“I want you as a warehouse manager.”
“I replied: ‘That sounds good. It’s a deal.’
And I haven’t regreed a single day. It was the
best decision of my life.”
AT EYE LEVEL
Werner originally started as a driver at Steckhan & Peters. Aer a few years, he switched
64
to the warehouse, where he gradually became
manager.
Werner quickly discovered that his new
employer was different from the old one.
“At Steckhan & Peters, I had to get permission from my boss for even the slightest thing.
There is much more freedom at Frode Laursen.
We are very much at eye level, and I have a great
deal of freedom to make decisions regarding
personnel issues.”
Today, Werner’s main task is to take care of
the staff and ensure sufficient personnel – but
not too many – to complete the tasks.
“The store must run as efficiently as possible. Naturally, we can’t have ten employees
doing the rounds with nothing to do. We have
around 60 permanent employees, and then
take in temporary staff as needed. Aer all, the
customers’ goods have to go out and the trucks
must not stand and wait too long to be loaded.
If Thorkil gets his way, they can only stay here
for a maximum of half an hour.”
