GLEN
FREIGHT FORWARDING IS AN
EXTENDED VERSION OF TETRIS
When Glen H. Andersen was in his final year
at business school, he still had no idea what
he would do aer graduating. But one day it all
became clear, when the school invited a freight
forwarder to come and talk about his job and
what it entailed.
“The mix of business acumen, figures and
language just sounded really interesting. I sent
out a couple of applications, and then I came for
an interview and was hired by Frode Laursen in
July 2004.”
VEHICLES NEED TO BE FILLED
It took some time to learn the freight forwarder’s job. It had not been part of the curriculum
at business school by any means, but Glen
gradually found his footing.
“We must ensure the vehicles are fully loaded for full capacity and optimal financial gain
each time. We combine the goods in relation
to what needs shipping together with which
destinations. And then we have to find the right
vehicle, with a driver who has enough hours to
manage the journey.”
But it doesn’t stop there. Glen and his
colleagues need to consider even more parameters: When do the goods need to be delivered?
Which type of trailer is suitable for the trip in
question?
“We drive a lot with yoghurt, which has
to be transported at +2 degrees, so it can’t
be shipped together with chocolate, where
the temperature has to be 10–20 degrees.
It’s a bit like an extended version of Tetris,
where we have to fill the right trailer with
the right amount of goods and then find the
right vehicle to manage all the deliveries.”
GOOD AND SKILLED COLLEAGUES
When Glen started in his job, he quickly
got to know people in the office.
The young people in the office did many
things together. They arranged a trip to Frode
Laursen’s logistics centre in Angered, went to
the cinema and much more.
“Because there weren’t so many of us, it was
easy to get together and agree on something.
It’s more difficult today as there are many more
of us, but we can still arrange social events and
count on the company to back us up. We’re
always encouraged at the staff meetings to do
something together with our colleagues.”
The relationship between colleagues is one
of the things Glen appriciate the most about
Frode Laursen.
“There are just some good and skilled colleagues who are always ready to cooperate and
pull together as teams.”
