OLE
I STILL HAVE MY PAYROLL NUMBER
Ole Munk retired a long time ago, but not entirely.
“I still have my payroll number, my PC and
my phone. Sometimes they call and say, ‘Was
this how we did it?’”
He started as a driver back in Frode’s time,
in 1971. First he transported cale for export,
then later beer for Ceres. One day, Frode presented him with a brand new truck with ‘Dansk
Supermarked’ emblazoned on the side. It was
the start of over 25 years during which Ole
transported meat and cold cuts for the supermarket chain that owns Bilka, Føtex and Neo,
and which is now called Salling Group.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TABLE
One day Thorkil called him and asked if he’d
like to come into the office:
“I became HR manager for hourly-paid staff
and moved to the other side of the table, where
I was to be the manager of my old colleagues.
Thorkil said, ‘If it doesn’t work, there’s always
a truck for you.’ That was good reassurance,
because in the first month I thought, ‘This is all
going wrong.’”
VISIT TO THE QUEEN
Things went quite well, however, and as HR
manager, one of Ole’s jobs was to go before
the Queen together with a former employee
who was receiving the Royal Medal of
Recompense aer 40 years of service
to the same employer.
In all, Ole accompanied former
employees before Her Majesty twelve
times. However, he was only allowed
to meet the Queen personally when he
retired and received the medal himself.
“We talked about when Frode
Laursen was the Purveyor to the
Royal Danish Court of hay and straw
to the stables at Marselisborg Palace
in Aarhus. I told her that I had also delivered
maresses to the royal family. We could have
talked for a long time, but then she looked up at
the clock and said, ‘It’s been nice talking to you.’
Then I knew it was time to head home.”
STILL ACTIVE
Even though the Royal Medal of Recompense now
resides in his home and Ole is officially retired,
he has kept his ties with Frode Laursen. He has
teamed up with a former colleague to promote the
‘Børn i trafikhøjde’ (Children in high-traffic areas)
campaign, aimed at teaching children how to
navigate safely in traffic with HGVs. Together with
his wife, he also maintains Frode Laursen’s employee holiday homes in Bønnerup, Grønhøj and
Svenljunga. Lastly, he is active in Frode Laursen’s
pensioners’ association, which he helped start.
