THE IMPORTANT ROLE
UPTIME PLAYS IN
GRANTS & FUNDING
In order to receive many of the grants and federal funding being made
available to lighten the cost burden of installing DC fast charging station
infrastructure, CPOs must demonstrate their commitment to ensuring
the reliability of their charging stations. They must have the resources,
planning, and knowledge necessary to maintain a high level of uptime.
This includes having trained technicians, preventative maintenance
programs, and the use of technology to monitor and respond to any
issues that may arise.

As part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), the National
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program provides grants to
strategically deploy EV fast charging infrastructure - reportedly covering
up to 80% of the total cost of the site.
With the current national average uptime of public EV chargers hovering
around only 75%, CPOs looking to receive NEVI funding have a large
uptime gap to cross in order to achieve 97% uptime.
NEVI guidelines include a formula to calculate uptime which, fortunately,
takes into account outages outside of the COP’s control*. These types
of outages can include electric utility service interruptions and outages
caused by vehicles.
*Internet or celluar service provider interruptions are not considered as an exclusion outside of
the operator’s control.
