THE PUBLIC EV CHARGER
UPTIME DILEMMA
Uptime is a critical factor in the success of public fast charging networks. It measures
the functional availability of chargers, and is an indicator of the reliability of the charging
infrastructure. A high level of uptime is essential for EV drivers, as it ensures that they
have access to charging when they need it.
In a 2022 Forbes Wheels survey, 43% of the 500 U.S. EV driver respondents reported
they had encountered broken public charging stations. The CEO of ChargerHelp! Kameale
Terry, a national EV charger maintenance provider, estimates that up to 32% of public
U.S. EV chargers are out of operation at any given time, with these outages going largely
undetected by Charge Point Operators (CPOs) until a technician is physically present.
The growth of the EV market is driving an increase in the demand for public fast charging
infrastructure. However, the uptime reliability of these charging stations remains a
