||| Works Report
At the Ordinary Meeting of Council held on 22 May 2024, the following key decisions
were made by Council:
During June Council’s Grading Crew will complete a maintenance grade on the
remainder of Roaring Beach Road, this was postponed during May to complete a
maintenance grade on Nubeena Back Road as the road surface was deteriorating
at an accelerated rate due to wet weather. The grading team will then move to
Stormlea Road and Radnor Road as they head towards the Port Arthur area in July.
Acting as a Planning Authority, Council endorsed the recommendation for one (1)
application.
• DA 137/2021 Minor Amendment, Construction of Multiple Dwellings (two
Dwellings)
• 1 Tasman Council Community Grant Application was endorsed.
(Turrakana Tasman Arts, Bush Dance)
• 2 management policies were approved
• Tasman Council Strategic Risk Register was approved
A full copy of the Council agenda for the meeting can be found on the Tasman
Council website, this contains full details of the projects and recommendations.
||| Happy 1st Year!
Blake Repine celebrates being with Tasman Council
for 1 full year and what an impact he has made within
Council and the local community.
Thank you Blake and keep up the great work you are
doing.
Council’s Drainage Crew will begin the month cleaning up logs etc. from tree works
completed in May. Once this is complete, they will commence drainage works on
Nubeena Back Road, and Hawker Street.
Foot path works are currently coming to completion on Blowhole Road. With new
projects continuing through June to upgrade the footpath network in Nubeena.
During June the Roads Crew will work towards completing potholing works on all
unsealed roads, as well as continued tree trimming works on Saltwater River Road,
and Safety Cove Road.
The Parks and Maintenance Crews continue to complete mowing and brush cutting
of our roadsides, sports grounds, and reserves.
As always, with ongoing works around the area, we ask that all road users, please
follow ALL permanent and temporary road signage on our roads, ensuring the
safety of not only road workers, but to keep all road users safe as well.
||| Waste Tip for June
Batteries cannot go in your kerbside bins! They are a leading cause of 昀res in
garbage trucks, recycling facilities and land昀lls.
||| Coloured for Cancer
In a show of solidarity and support for those impacted by cancer, Blake Repine, the
General Manager of Tasman Council, recently had his hair dyed yellow as part of
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraising event. The Tasman community rallied
behind Council, helping to raise an impressive $1,938.00 toward the cause.
The event, which aims to raise funds for cancer research and support services,
received overwhelming support from the local community. Blake’s bold gesture was
met with appreciation and gratitude, as
he went the extra mile to raise awareness
and funds for such an important cause.
“Thank you to Allison Reid Chelton from
Allisons Hair Dressing for taking time out
of her busy day to colour Blakes hair and
to everyone who donated and supported
our efforts to make a difference in the
昀ght against cancer,” said Blake. The
success of the fundraising venture is a
testament to the generosity and kindness
of the Tasman community.
Thank you for your support.
||| Batting for Road Safety
The National Road Safety Week 20/20 Cricket Friendly Match held at Nubeena
Recreation Ground on Saturday May 11th was a resounding success, with the
community coming together to support an important cause. The event saw
cricket teams, emergency service members, and members of the general public
participating in a friendly match, with teams drawn at random from a hat.
The atmosphere was 昀lled with laughter and camaraderie as players of all ages
joined in on the fun. Participants were encouraged to wear something yellow in
support of the National Road Safety Campaign. The event also included a few
pranks and dances for added entertainment.
During the match, a free BBQ and beverages were provided at the Nubeena Cricket
Club, where attendees were able to mingle and enjoy the festivities. The highlight
of the day was the awarding of the ‘player of the match’ prize, with Danny Watson
being named the winner and receiving a $500 voucher from Jet Automotive.
The Tasman Council would like
to thank all those who attended
and supported the event,
especially the 昀re, ambulance,
and police services who helped
spread the message of road
safety.
It was a fun-昀lled day with a
serious message, and we look
forward to more community
events like this in the future.
When compressed, batteries can catch alight – and when they’re in contact with
highly 昀ammable waste, it results in enormous blazes! Battery related 昀res are
becoming more common in garbage trucks and at transfer stations.
Putting batteries in your kerbside bins is dangerous and can have disastrous
consequences – including putting waste contractor personnel and community
members at risk and increasing the cost of waste management.
Most batteries also contain heavy metals (nickel, cadmium, mercury) and if they end
up in land昀ll, they will leak resulting in contaminated creeks, soil and groundwater.
So where can dead batteries go?
Batteries can be recycled and almost all the material they are made from including
the valuable metals reused.
There are ecobatt drop offs at Woolworths, Coles and Mitre 10 in Sorell, and at
Hill Street in Dodges Ferry. These take all regular battery sizes (AA etc), button
batteries, easily removal Li-ion batteries (power tools etc.), and handheld
rechargeable batteries. Lead-acid batteries can be dropped off at the Waste
Transfer Station in Nubeena.
