Rabbit
surge
builds
A BIG increase in rabbit numbers
has sparked one Tasmanian council
to call for help.
The Meander Valley Council
last week wrote to the Department
of Primary Industries, Parks,
Water and Environment requesting
assistance with a rabbit problem.
The council says there have been
reports of significant damage to
not just gardens but also building
foundations as rabbit numbers have
jumped up.
There are reports of increased
rabbit numbers across the state.
The Meander Valley Council
Green power
P10-11
has requested DPIPWE evaluate
how effective a strain of calicivirus
released in 2017 has been in
controlling the rabbit population.
The council is also requesting the
department consider another release
of a virus control.
It has also asked DPIPWE to
produce a guide for the public on
control methods for rabbits.
It is believed the exceptional
seasonal conditions this spring
and rapid pasture growth have
been contributing factors in the
population jump.
