Seven bid for Mayor

SORELL residents go back to the polls
this month to elect a new mayor and
councillor, after the resignation of
Kerry Vincent.
The postal by-election is compulsory and seven candidates have put
up their hand to take charge of the
municipality.
More than 13,000 electors are
enrolled.
Postal ballot papers will be in letterboxes over the next few days and
must be returned by 2pm on Thursday, June 20.
Three Sorell councillors have put
forward their names to be mayor,
while four newcomers are taking a
tilt at the role.
Candidates for mayor are Jeffrey
Blake of Carlton, Janet Gatehouse of
Wattle Hill, Kristiann Horvath of Carlton, Michael Larkins of Dodges Ferry,
Marison Miro Quesada of Dodges
Ferry, Melinda Reed of Dodges Ferry
and Jason Spence of Sorell.
Ms Gatehouse promised if elected
mayor she would support rural
industries and collaborate with existing organisations such as BEST to
increase employment and business
opportunities throughout Sorell.
“I will also seek to combine innovative methods and traditional practices
to protect our environment,’’ she said.
“I am aware of the challenges facing residents. The rapid rate of growth
in the municipality means we need
to push for sustained funding from
State and Federal agencies to create
the infrastructure we need supporting
this growth. I am prepared to do that.’’
