Dairy joins seaweed trial
KAROLIN MACGREGOR
MORE than 24,000 beef and
dairy cattle will be included in
a large-scale trial across Tasmania using East Coast seaweed to help reduce livestock
methane emissions.
The $8.34 million project
will centre on using native
Tasmanian seaweed produced
by the Sea Forest company in
a collaborative trial including
TasFarmers along with the
Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, Fonterra, Annandale
Dairy Farm and Tasmanian
feedlot AEON.
The project will be partly
funded with $4 million from
the State Government.
TasFarmers President Ian
Sauer said the peak body was
taking a lead role in a collaborative effort with industry partners to address climate change
and reduce greenhouse emissions as part of its strategic
plan.
“This project is world-leading, as the Sea Forest Asparagopsis initiative holds
international signi昀cance in
its efforts to go from concept
to commercialisation, positioning Tasmania as a leader
in agricultural innovation,”
he said.
“By focusing on methane
reduction in cattle, the project
aims to make a tangible difference in combating climate
change, contributing to Tasmania’s reputation as a clean
and green region.
Mr Sauer said Tasmania
was punching well above
its weight by developing
greenhouse-reducing technology and reducing emissions
in the production of red meat.
“Sea Forest is leading the
charge among other companies in this 昀eld,” he said.
“Their advancements match
or surpass those of any competitor, and being Tasmanian
adds to the signi昀cance.
“Originating from the East
Coast of Tasmania, this natural product distinguishes
itself as authentically Tasmanian, devoid of any synthetic
elements.”
Annandale Dairy’s Richard Gardner discusses the
