Help remove gun menace
DAVID DANIELS
Crime Stoppers Tasmania
Chairman
THROUGHOUT May and June,
Crime Stoppers is encouraging
people to help reduce the number of
illegal 昀rearms in the community by
anonymously sharing information.
With an estimated 260,000
unregistered guns across the nation,
all Australians should think about how
they would feel if they stayed silent
about an illegal gun which was then
used to harm or kill someone.
Criminals often go to great lengths
to obtain a 昀rearm illegally and then
conceal it from authorities, so it’s
unlikely they would go to that effort
unless they are prepared to use it.

Deer appointments Park resident rights
TWO deer industry representatives will bring their experience to the table following their
appointment to the Tasmanian
Game Council by the Tasmanian Government.
Primary Industries and Water
Minister Jane Howlett congratulated Andrew Lockett from
the Tasmanian Deer Advisory
Committee (TDAC) and Scott
Freeman from the Australian
Deer Association (ADA) on
their appointment.
“The Government recognises
the economic and social contribution of recreational hunting
and continues to support it by
delivering on our 2030 Strong
Plan for Tasmania’s Future,”
Ms Howlett said.
“The appointments deliver
on the Government’s First 100
Days commitment,” she said.
“I am certain these appointments will strengthen the representation of recreational
hunters on the TGC.”
GIVING long-term residents
of caravan parks and park
owners clear rights and obligations is the subject of current
consultation.
Small Business and Consumer Affairs Minister Madeleine Ogilvie said owners and
long-term residents of caravan
parks currently need to navigate a complex range of legal
issues including contractual,
planning, building, property
and other laws.
“We’re working to strike
a balance between supporting our visitor economy sector, private ownership rights
and housing affordability,” Ms
Ogilvie said.
“Concerns have been raised
with various levels of government about the rights and
responsibilities of owners and
residents of Tasmanian caravan parks.
“The Government has listened to these concerns.”
UNDER new Opposition
Leader Dean Winter, the Labor
Party has ditched its anti-stadium policy and now backs an
AFL home ground.
Since becoming leader, Mr
Winter has publicly focussed
hard on jobs policy.
“Tasmania’s economy has
slowed. Five thousand jobs have
been lost since Jeremy Rockliff
lost majority Government,’’ Mr
Winter said.
“Building companies are
going bust. There are no major
infrastructure projects scheduled
to come online once the Bridgewater Bridge is 昀nished.
“A stadium will mean thousands of jobs in construction,
including hundreds of apprenticeships. That’s why Labor will
be backing a new stadium.
“Labor’s support doesn’t
mean the Premier will be let off
the hook for the promises he has
made – far from it. He needs
to deliver his capped spend of
$375m, with private investors
to cover any shortfall.
“While we will not be standing in the way of the current
Macquarie Point stadium proposal, we still hold concerns
around the deliverability of the
project.
“The Premier should not rule
out the Stadium 2.0 project.
“Labor has changed.
“Under my leadership, the
Labor Party stands for safe,
secure, well-paid jobs. That
means we will support projects
with the potential to create thousands of new jobs – including a
new stadium.’’
Rather than welcome the
backflip, Liberal Clark MP
Simon Behrakis raised concerns about close ties between
Mr Winter and a lobbyist for the
Macquarie Stadium 2.0 project.
“Dean Winter must come
clean about what role former
Labor Leader and personal mentor Paul Lennon is playing in
his stadium back昀ip,’’ Mr Behrakis said.
“Tasmania’s worst kept secret
is that Mr Winter’s stunning stadium back昀ip has been orchestrated by Mr Lennon.’’
Mr Lennon is lobbying for the
alternative Stadium 2.0 project
as opposed to the Liberal’s preferred Macq 01 stadium.
Dean Winter
“Mr Winter pretends he’s had
an epiphany but the truth is the
job he is backing is those of Mr
Lennon’s mates.
“Did Winter’s stadium back昀ip go through the Labor Caucus or did he bypass them
because Captain Lennon made
the call on his behalf?
“Mr Winter needs to explain
what discussions he’s had with
Mr Lennon about his stadium
strategy.
“He’s not only infuriated his
Labor colleagues with his secret
stadium deal – being rolled out a
day after the Upper House elections, he’s treating all Tasmanians like fools.’’
