General practice life saved
A LAUNDERDALE general
practice has been saved from
closure.
The Lauderdale General
Practice and the State Government have collaborated to
ensure that residents receive
the healthcare that they need.
Health Minister Guy Barnett
GP retirements and an inability
to hire new doctors was putting
stain on practices.
“We understand just how
important access to a local GP
service is for people in Lauderdale, and we have once again
acted quickly to secure this positive outcome,” Mr Barnett said.
“This will ensure the community is not left without this
important primary health service and I want to sincerely
thank Dr Zhan Chen, Dr Hailey Woolveridge and Dr Jerome
Muir-Wilson for their work.
“It follows similar efforts to
save GP practices at St Marys,
Bridgewater, Glenorchy and
East Devonport, and once
again demonstrates our commitment to ensure Tasmanians
have access to GP services despite the repeated failures of
the Federal Labor Government.
“GPs are the frontline of
health care and reduce the
pressure on both our EDs and
our urgent care clinics, and the
evidence is clear that the Federal Government are continuing to fail Tasmanians in their
responsibility to adequately
fund them.
“Federal Labor is leaving
Tasmania off the map – it is
grossly inadequate, and we will
continue to 昀ercely advocate
for what Tasmanians deserve.”
THE new Services Australia
Service Centre in Sorell is due
to open by the end of this year.
Federal Services Minister
Bill Shorten and Labor Lyons
MP Brian Mitchell turned the
昀rst sod last month.
Services Australia will also
pioneer a co-location approach
with Services Tasmania, so citizens don’t have to navigate different levels of government in
different locations for all their
needs.
The new service centre,
co-located with Service Tasmania, will offer a full face-toface Services Australia service,
meaning Sorell and Tasman
Peninsula residents will no longer need to travel to Rosny to
access a full suite of Services
Australia services.
Currently, Services Australia
offers a digital service in Sorell,
staffed by one service delivery of昀cer, while the agency’s
Mobile Services Centre visits
regional and rural communities
in Tasmania around once a year.
Tasmanian company The
Young Group will build the
new Sorell Service Centre,
with construction expected to
support about 27 jobs.
The centre is being built
on 33 Dubs and Co Drive,
Sorell.
“We know how important
face-to-face government services are, so it’s great to see
the new Sorell Service Centre
is a step closer to opening its
doors,’’ Mr Shorten said.
“We want to connect Services Australia customers to
more services in the one location, and we are working in
partnerships across state and
federal governments to do that.
“We are also progressing
myGov to be an app that hosts
federal and state services, such
as drivers’ licences. Sorell will
be the bricks and mortar equivalent – a one-stop-shop for your
dealings with two levels of
government.”
Mr Mitchell said the new
centre would provide access
to Medicare and Centrelink
services.
“It forms part of the Australian Government’s commitment to making in-person
government services available
across the country, especially
in regional and rural areas and
ful昀ls the promise that Bill and
I made at the 2022 election.”
