Act quickly to lure top staff
KAROLIN MACGREGOR
WHEN it comes to attracting
and keeping the best staff
Tasmanian dairy farmers have
been told there are a few simple
tactics that can help their
businesses stay ahead of the
pack.
Mandy Johnson from Insight
on Site is a business author
and recruitment consultant
who has worked with a wide
range of businesses helping
them identify how to not only
find, but also keep top-quality
employees.
She was a guest speaker at
last week’s Tasmanian Dairy
Conference and told participants
that finding the right people
often started with the right type
of job advertisement.
While most employers frame
their advertising around what
they want in their employee,
Ms Johnson said placing
an ad which highlights the
opportunities for the employee,
including lifestyle benefits,
could attract a different type of
applicant.
“Once you’ve had a think
about what benefits you can
offer you package them up and
make your business stand out
from other employers in your
area,” she said.
“What you need is a killer
hiring ad. The hiring ad for me
is like the arrow to the heart for
someone.
“Without a good ad it’s like
fishing. You’ve thrown out the
fishing line, but there’s no bait
on the hook.”
Once
applications
start
coming in, Ms Johnson said
the next crucial step is acting
quickly to get people in for
interviews.
She said in a highly competitive environment where
quality employees are sought
after, they could get multiple
job offers, so getting in fast was
vital.

are most likely going to be
picked up by another business.
However, she says getting
people into the business is only
half the battle.
“I say that recruiting people
without actually having a
strategy for retaining them is a
bit like pouring liquid gold into
a bathtub and leaving out the
plug,” Ms Johnson said.
“Just hire great people and
keep them, and you’re way
ahead of the game.”
Part of that is making a really
good first impression on new
employees, particularly on their
first day.
Ms Johnson said taking
time to sit down with the new
employee, making them feel
welcome and even giving them
a small gift could really help.
After that Ms Johnson said
scheduling in monthly one-onone chats to gauge progress
and openly discuss issues
and opportunities that come
up will help keep the lines of
communication open.
While salary is a factor that
attracts people to certain roles,
Ms Johnson said for many
people having flexible working
conditions and a job that
gives them a sense of purpose
were much more important
considerations.

Ideally, she said employers
should be contacting the quality
applicants
straight
away,
interviewing them and hiring
them within a week if possible.
