the valley
Since 1953, the Derwent Valley Gazette has been the voice of the Derwent Valley
and Central Highlands, and has recently expanded reach into Brighton and surrounds.
Edited by former deputy editor of The Mercury, Martine Haley, this fiesty, busy newspaper
trumpets the virtues of its territory every week.
Proudly and unashamedly local, the Gazette is the first choice for news and information
on local events for residents and visitors to the Valley. Published every Wednesday with a
cover price of 80 cents, the Derwent Valley Gazette has a strong and loyal readership and
deep and abiding links in its communities.
The region boasts a rich history in forestry, paper manufacturing and agriculture, especially
hops (signified by the oast houses in the Gazette’s masthead) and more recently, international success in berry and stone-fruit horticulture. Outside interest in the Valley has
continued to grow, particularly upon Mt Field National Park (Tasmania’s first nature reserve;
an area of diverse ecological and tourist interest) and both New Norfolk’s and Brighton’s recent residential and commercial development as a commuter town and major services hub.
Circulation of the Gazette covers the entire Derwent Valley and Brighton councils, as well
as significant reach into the adjacent Central Highlands, Southern Midlands, and Greater
Hobart.
