“I don’t think I like your idea of qualified
investors,” said Finney, growing agitated.
“Actually, I don’t like a lot of things
you’ve said.”
Mr Shift smiled a predatory smile. “Well,
I don’t make the rules,” he said, moving
briskly to the door and stepping out onto
the refinery floor.
Unsure of what was happening, Finney
trailed behind Mr Shift. “Wait,” he said.
“Where are you going? Are you still
going to give me crypto for gold?”
“I think you’ve taken up enough of my
time today,” said Mr Shift as Finney
caught up. “I’m going back to my office.
You go wherever you like, as long as it’s
off my property.”
Anger and confusion threatened to break
Finney’s composure. He felt like crying.
“You said you’d help me with my mission
to learn about crypto,” he said. “But all
you did was steal my chesta and replace
it with a hunk of junk that probably can’t
even regulate my processes! You’re a
liar and a thief!”
“I’ve been called worse,” said Mr Shift
as they neared the exit. “Listen,” he
said, tossing a Shift gold coin in Finney’s
general direction. “Here’s something for
your trouble. Don’t say I never gave you
anything.”
Catching the coin, Finney was about to
say more when he found himself suddenly
outside, shoved out the door by Mr Shift.
The refinery door locked behind Finney.
He looked around, feeling suddenly very
alone and lost on the busy sidewalk. Was
this what it felt like to fail at a mission?
Becoming distracted by a small knot
of people surrounding a man at a
tall cardboard table nearby, Finney

wandered over to see what all of the
excitement was about.
“Find the queen,” said the man, moving
cards around while spectators studied
them intently. “Find the lady. Got sharp
eyes? You’ll double your money.”
After watching carefully for a while,
Finney noticed that no one ever correctly
guessed the queen’s position. “Is this
man cheating?” he asked.
“Duh,” said a teenager who stood next
to Finney. “Haven’t you ever seen this
game?”
“We don’t have it on my planet,” said
Finney. “I shouldn’t be letting it distract
me. I’m on a mission to learn about
crypto.”
“That’s cool,” said the teenager. “My
cousin mines Helium. He says it’s part
of a revolution.”
“Helium?” asked Finney. “Like the gas?”
“The crypto token, duh,” said the
teenager. “It’s like wireless infrastructure.
Part of the internet of things, you know.”
Finney didn’t know, but neither did he
wish to seem uncool for not knowing.
“I’ve heard of the internet of things, but
not Helium. What else can you tell me
about it?”
“Not much,” said the teenager. “I’m
way more into NFTs. Got a pretty sweet
collection.”
“You do?” asked Finney.
“Yeah, I’m all about that EOS,” said the
teenager.
“EOS?” asked Finney. “I can’t remember
