Having paid the price of admission,
Finney entered Shift Tower and found
himself in a large hall. Waiting for his
eyes to adjust to the indoor lighting after
being outside for so long, he started
down the hall and quickly found a lobby
area flanked by a security guard sitting
behind a desk. “Excuse me,” he said to
the security guard. “I’m here to trade
gold for crypto like the signs said. Where
do I go?”
“You must be the golden boy,” said the
guard dryly. “The boss says you get the
VIP treatment, so why don’t you just take
a seat and someone will be down in a
bit for you.”
“My name’s Finney,” said Finney.
“Though I am golden and a boy.”
“Just take a seat,” said the guard, mildly
amused.
Finney sat on a beige vinyl bench next to
a woman who was reading a magazine
about sports. A large clock on the wall
audibly ticked off each second. Across
the room, the security guard sat transfixed
by his phone. After two minutes, Finney
decided that the room was the most
boring place he had ever visited. “Excuse
me,” he said to the woman reading the
magazine. “Do you know anything about
crypto? I came here to learn.”
The woman put her magazine down. “I
know a little,” she said. “What’s your
interest?”
“I want to know everything,” said Finney.

“Thanks,” said Finney, accepting the card
gratefully. “I must be very lucky to be

“Pardon me,” said a younger woman
who had arrived to the waiting room and
headed in Finney’s direction. “Golden
boy? I’m Elaine, here to escort you to
Mr Shift’s office.”
“Well, do you know what a blockchain
is?” asked the woman.
“I’m Finney,” said Finney. “Is Mr Shift the
one I see about trading gold for crypto,
like the signs said.”
“That’s a list of transactions that many
people keep copies of?” answered Finney.
“Like a list that everybody updates and
