Finney Vol. 1 - Immutable Journey - Flipbook - Page 20
Reaching his destination, Finney
approached the base of Shift Tower,
impressed by the size of the skyscraper.
“What an amazing place to learn about
crypto,” he said, walking around the
building until he found its entrance.
Finney tried the door but couldn’t get
in. “It’s stuck,” he said, stepping back
to reassess the situation.
“I don’t understand,” said Finney, sitting
down on the sidewalk. “I followed all the
signs but now I’m here and don’t know
what to do. Maybe Snap can help.”
Finney’s girlfriend Snap answered right
away. “Hi traveler,” she said. “Did you
get my messages?”
“I’ve been busy,” said Finney. “Good
to hear your voice now, though. How is
everything?”
“Well, if you’d listened to my messages,
you’d know how everything was,” said
Snap.
“Snap, you know I’m on an important
mission,” said Finney.
“And you’re only now calling me back?”
said Snap. “I get it.”
“Maybe I should call you back later when
you’re in a better mood,” said Finney.
“Whatever,” said Snap. “Love you. Bye.”
Sighing, Finney turned his attention back
to the matter at hand. He hadn’t seen
anyone pass through the entrance to
Shift Tower, so he decided to wait for this
to happen. A few minutes later, a man
exited the building. Jumping to his feet,
Finney approached the man. “Excuse
me,” he said. “Do I need a special key
to open that door?”
20
“Not to exit,” replied the man. “But
admission has a price. Didn’t you see
the control box?”
“You mean that?” asked Finney, pointing
at a gold receptacle next to the door. “I
thought that was for mail or something.”
“Nope,” said the man. “Just follow the
instructions on the screen and you’ll be
good to go.”
“Thanks,” said Finney as the man walked
away. Then, inspecting the rounded gold
box more closely, Finney discovered it
had a display screen mounted above it.
“Deposit Gold to Enter,” said the screen.
At first, Finney was puzzled by the
message. Having come here to trade
gold for crypto, he wondered if he would
be awarded crypto by this unusual box.
Probably not, he decided. Being made of
gold, Finney felt like the box was asking
him for something very personal. But, if
that was the custom on this planet, he
would follow the custom and give what
was asked.
“What part of me does the box want?”
asked Finney. “All of my parts are
important to me. But I guess some parts
are less important than others.”
First, Finney tried to poke his nose through
the slot in the top of the box, but that
didn’t open the door. Next, he managed
to fit a toe into the slot, but still nothing
happened. After poking his fingers into
the box with similarly disappointing
results, Finney was about to abandon the
whole idea when a bizarre thought struck
him. “What if the box wants my gold
separate from me?” he asked. “What if
I will lose the gold the box requests?”
Pacing nervously around the area, Finney
became inured to the prospect of giving
