The Humane Society of South Central Michigan is the area’s nonprofit advocate,
sanctuary and source for companion animals since 1887. Our mission is:
• to protect animals from suffering and cruelty
• to provide safe and responsible care for unwanted or abused companion animals;
and
• to enhance the lives of animals and people through education, adoption, and foster
care.
We believe in second chances at the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. Our
service area includes all of Calhoun County and parts of Kalamazoo, Barry and Branch
counties. We keep animals as long as it takes to find a good home once the animal
passes temperament testing and is checked for good health. Our longest dog resident,
Rolley, has been with the shelter more eight months. Our longest feline resident, Sage,
has been at the shelter more than years. The Watkins Road shelter provides care for
up to 100 animals a day.
Our agency is a private, nonprofit organization. We are not affiliated with animal
control, and we do not have the city or county contracts for animal control. We are also
not affiliated with any other Humane Society or shelter. We have nothing to do with
HSUS, the Humane Society of the United States. We have a governing board currently
of 10 members of our community including educators, a veterinarian, business owners
and community leaders. The money raised in our community for our shelter is used at
our shelter.
