State of Florida Governor-Appointed Board Opportunities
(Disability and Non-Disability Specific)
Florida also has a variety of opportunities for board leadership and advocacy through
positions which are appointed by the Governor of Florida. Some of these board positions are
disability specific and focus on areas more narrowly impacting individuals with disabilities
and families, while others are not disability-specific and focus on a broader array of issues.
Both offer opportunities to share a disability perspective and impact the community.
Disability-Specific Governor-Appointed Boards:

ABLE United - Board of Directors
Ø “ABLE United is the state of Florida’s ABLE Program and is administered by Florida ABLE,
Inc., a direct-support organization of the Florida Prepaid College Board. ABLE United
offers a unique program designed to help Floridians with eligible disabilities save for
qualified expenses and invest for the future in a tax-advantaged account ‒ without
losing federal or state benefits (like SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, HUD Assistance,
Section 8, etc.)”

Alzheimer’s Disease Advisory Committee
Ø “The Advisory Board, authorized in Section 381.82, Florida Statutes, advises the State
Surgeon General as to the scope of the research program and shall submit its
recommendations for proposals to be funded.”

Continuing Care Advisory Council
Ø “The Continuing Care Advisory Council (Council) acts in an advisory capacity to the
Office of Insurance Regulation (Office). The Council recommends to the Office any
changes in statutes and rules pertaining to Continuing Care Retirement Communities.
Additionally, upon the request of the Office, the Council assists with any corrective
action, rehabilitation or cessation of business plan for a provider.”

Diabetes Advisory Council
Ø “The Diabetes Advisory Council serves as the advisory unit to the Department of Health,
other governmental agencies, professional and other organizations, and the general
public. The council provides statewide leadership to continuously improve the lives of
Floridians with diabetes and reduce the burden of diabetes. The Diabetes Advisory
