The State Secondary Transition Interagency Committee (SSTIC)
Ø “The State Secondary Transition Interagency Committee (SSTIC) is a state-level
interagency team designed to facilitate inter-organizational understanding, identify
needs grounded in data, identify and realign capacity building resources, facilitate
collaboration and avoid duplication, and share responsibility and planning to improve
secondary transition. SSTIC was initially called the Transition Steering Committee and
was funded by the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE)
to build state capacity. The committee meets twice per year with additional conference
calls of its subcommittees. The SSTIC has several subcommittees that are charged with
identifying gaps, barriers, and potential solutions; reviewing recommendations from
various partners with secondary transition interests; and may include identifying issues
that need to be taken back to respective agencies.”

Disability-Related Board Opportunities at the Local Government Level
You may be able to take part in a Disability Advisory Board in your city such as the one in Miami “which
advises the city commission and administrative staff on concerns that affect the life and living conditions
of persons with disabilities.” Orange County and Broward have similar opportunities. Your local city
and/or county government, may have this opportunity as well. If it does not, an advocacy opportunity
might be found in initiating one.
Disability-Related National Board Opportunities
The sky is the limit! Remember that advocacy and leadership opportunities do not stop in your county,
or even in the state of Florida. Depending on your interest and expertise, you may also consider national
board opportunities. This allows the opportunity to amplify your advocacy message by having a broader
national audience.
There are national boards which focus on:

Self-advocacy
Public policy
Type of disability
Prominent life areas intersecting with disability (e.g., employment, transportation, housing)
You can learn more about national boards by researching their mission and work on their website, and
then reach out to them directly to express an interest in applying.
