support, including students with
learning challenges and students

while updating and innovating
curriculum and tools in every

We will pursue and make deliberate
efforts at all institutional levels
to ensure our school is a place
where differences are welcomed,
where different perspectives are
respectfully heard, and where
every individual feels a sense of
belonging and inclusion. Students
and community members will
confidently live the value of respect
through actions that promote
equity, diversity, and inclusion.
We will ensure Explorer West
remains a highly attractive middle
school option with sound finances
that can serve West Seattle and
surrounding communities for many
years to come. We will do this by
developing our campus, growing our
development efforts, and improving
our branding and marketing
programs.
PLANS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS
Expand Learning Support:
Expand support for a diverse group
of learners through well defined
alternative learning approaches,
while continuing to provide
opportunities to intellectually
challenge all students.
Develop Our Faculty: Increase
faculty professional development
programs to build skills and remain
current on educational principles
and ideas.
Innovate the Student Experience:
Evaluate current student experience
to improve what and how we teach
while building on what has made
us successful. For each program
we will examine opportunities
for a) updating and modernizing
curriculum; b) informing
educational experiences through
the lens of equity, diversity, and
inclusion; and c) innovating on
tools, technology, and spaces to
better support learning objectives.
Remove Barriers to Access:
Regularly identify, evaluate, and
address issues related to access,
including cost, application process
and experience, and factors
related to physical, cultural, or
learning diversity that impede full
participation in the Explorer West
program.
Increase Diversity: Ensure that our
admissions and hiring practices are
culturally sensitive and accessible
to all, and that our marketing and
branding efforts help Explorer West
become known as a school that
values and nurtures diversity.
Build Capacity: Provide ongoing
professional development on
best practices for teaching across
cultural differences that foster
belonging and empowering students
to interrupt bias in themselves
and others. Equip members of
our community to engage more
confidently in the work of living our
school values.
Develop a Beautiful Functional
Campus: Address the long-term
need to renovate, replace on-site,
or relocate our campus. As needed,
we will conduct a capital campaign
to fund the site development plan
in order to improve the beauty,
sustainability, and functionality
of our spaces, while ensuring a
financially robust operating model
and affordability for families.
Grow our Culture of Philanthropy:
Grow a strong Culture of
Philanthropy within the entire
Explorer West community, with
giving opportunities through
monetary and in-kind donations, as
well as volunteering programs with
the school and the community.
Build Marketing and Branding
Programs: Update how we market
the school to potential families
while expanding our geographic
and demographic markets, and
building stronger relationships with
past, current and potential families
and students.
