A Guide to Claiming Compensation
Following a Road Traffic Accident
No two road traffic accidents will be the same, the consequences can vary from minor injuries to
catastrophic life-changing injuries. In the case of injuries caused by an individual’s negligence, the
injured person may be entitled to compensation to a greater or lesser degree depending on the
seriousness of the injury and the length of the recovery time, if recovery is an option.

recognising that immediately following a road traffic
accident the major concern is to ensure that the injured person received medical treatment as soon as
possible, there are some things that, if possible, should
be done immediately that will support a claim for
compensation.
• Note the weather conditions
In the event of an accident, Claimants should try
to obtain as much of the following information as
possible:
• Note down in writing all the circumstances of the
accident, the cause of the accident in your opinion,
where it happened, when it happened, who was involved, who you believe caused the accident and who
witnessed the accident.
• Report the accident to the police
• Photograph your own footwear and clothing.
• Obtain contact details of any witnesses, including
staff in any shops that were close by.
• Obtain contact details of the emergency services staff
and of any police who attended
• Obtain contact details of the insurance company of
the vehicle involved.
• Obtain any documentation outlining your injuries
from the emergency services and the hospital, if you
were treated in hospital.
More comprehensive and detailed claimant’s
evidence, especially when it is corroborated by witnesses, offers the best chance of successfully obtaining
compensation for their injuries and the distress

Mr Thomas Chapman BSc., MB.ChB., FRCS (Plast), is an experienced consultant plastic surgeon with a successful
private practice serving Bristol and the three counties.
He attended Bristol Medical School completing his degree with honors and an additional degree in Physiology with First
class honors aided by a scholarship from the Smith and Nephew foundation. Completed 6 years of traditional surgical
training passing the MRCS before 6 years of further intensive plastic surgery training culminating in the award of
FRCS(Plast) and recognition by the GMC as a specialist in 2009.
In October 2011 Mr Chapman was appointed as a fixed term consultant at NBT in particular to support the lower limb,
breast and sarcoma services. In addition to these specific duties he contributed to the on-call rota, and supported the
plastics trauma and skin cancer services. His NHS practice focuses on reconstruction for trauma and cancers of the skin
and soft tissues. He is a member of the skin and sarcoma MDT (Multidisciplinary teams) in Bristol.
He can consult on and perform the full spectrum of cosmetic and breast procedures as well as surgery for skin cancer,
hand surgery and limb reconstruction. With subspecialist interests in lower limb surgery and sarcoma.

Burcot Hall Hospital, Bromsgrove and The Wye Clinic, Hereford.
Mr Chapman is a senior lecturer at Bristol University Medical School, and has over 30 peer-review publications as well
as contributions to medical texts and guidance for surgeons. He has been an invited speaker to a number of national and
international meetings and courses. Also involved in the national selection of trainees in plastic surgery and local annual
review of trainee competency (ARCP).
