We are “Playing
through Grief.”
This year, we launched “Playing
through Grief” events to expand
our reach to kids and families in
under-resourced communities. We
partnered with local organizations to
build a foundation of trust on which
to deliver programs beyond camp
that create joy and healing at the
intersection of grief and play. First
we get kids moving and laughing,
and then we make space for sharing
and healing. This year, we piloted
two “Playing through Grief” events
in MD/DC, serving 50 kids and
providing peer support for 35 adults.
We led audience
talk-backs on
Broadway.
We were honored to help set up
and lead talk-back sessions this year
in New York City at two different
shows with grief-related themes.
In September, we partnered with
the Broadway company of Disney’s
Tony-award winning musical,
“The Lion King.” Ten campers
plus their caregivers were invited
to watch the performance and
meet privately afterward with cast
members to discuss how grief and
resilience show up in the play. The
cast members generously shared
their own stories of loss with our
campers and how they shape the
way they portray their characters.
