VISIT 2: ROYAL LIBERTY SCHOOL
SCIENCE AND GEOGRAPHY VISIT TO ICELAND
VISIT OBJECTIVES
IN A NUTSHELL
To explore the ecology of Iceland
through activities such as whale
watching, alongside learning about
geological processes. On top of the
more conventional learning outcomes,
we also wanted to provide new and
unique travel experiences for the
students.
▶ On day one we flew over Iceland to get our bearings and a taste of
what Iceland had to offer.
▶ We took a walking tour of Reykjavik before heading into Iceland’s
unique landscape.
▶ Wow moments included seeing dolphins, porpoises and a Minke Whale
from the water; and witnessing impressive eruptions from the Great
Geysir in Thingvellir National Park.
▶ We went behind waterfalls; visited the black beach at Vik; and drank
pure glacier water at the top of the Solheimajokull glacier.

WHAT’S THE VERDICT?
The visit gave students a real taste of the country, its geology, and
ecology. It was a once-in-a-lifetime visit for many reasons. With the
glaciers melting, they may never get the chance to walk on them again.
There was very little downtime, meaning that the students got to
experience as much as possible in the time that we were in Iceland.
Royal Liberty School was awarded the EVOLVE Advice Excellence in Educational Visits
Management Award in 2023.
