A first taste of university (continued)
Year 6 students f rom Simon de Senlis Primary School attended
the STEAM Northants day at the University of Northampton.
We asked teacher Jo Hateley what the children thought about
their university experience...
Why did you attend STEAM
Northants?
To show our pupils the vast range of careers
and experiences available to them in the
future in STEAM subjects and to inspire
them by showing them how interesting and
varied these subjects can be.
What was your favourite part of
the day?
Our favourite things were the activities
we took part in: a sports rehabilitation
session where we learnt about how people
can be treated to help them recover from
injury and illness; a fantastic aerial theatre
performance that taught us about the
impact of throwing plastics away on the
world’s bodies of water and encouraged

us to consider our actions in the face of
climate change; and meeting animals,
including a whiptail scorpion.
We loved the chemistry
department of the
university where we
could make models of
chemical compounds
from sweets.
Would you
recommend it to other schools?
Yes! It is a wonderful opportunity to learn
about STEAM careers and to encourage the
children to consider where their interest and
strengths lie. The children all came away
buzzing with excitement at what they had
seen.
