STEAMing
towards a brighter future

isiting the University of Northampton on one of its STEAM Northants events days is something very
special. Nearly 3,000 young people from schools across the county descend on the University’s Waterside
Campus for a careers day with a difference. This isn’t your traditional jobs fair for school leavers; it’s an
interactive, inspiring day of talks, demonstrations and hands-on activities for young people from years 6 to 13,
getting them fired up about their future.
The first difference you’ll notice is that it’s STEAM not
STEM, connecting the traditional science, technology,
engineering and maths subjects with the arts and
creativity. The aim of the event is to inspire and
enthuse children and young people in all areas of
STEAM.
Activities are engaging and interactive and include
immersive 3D domes, virtual and augmented reality, a
construction plant simulator, problem solving escape
room, music and multimedia video games, medical
show, women in STEAM, environmental law workshop,
coding, prosthetics for stage and screen, wildlife
encounters, a paramedic suite, green screen TV studio,
electronics engineering demonstrations, and much
more.

Many of our pupils were really
inspired to look further into the
STEAM options available to them in
later life, including a number of girls
who were enthused by the idea of
engineering and science as a career.
