Nutrition
Schools play a vital role in creating healthy environments that promote and support
healthy eating habits for all students. Most children and youth spend a majority
of their time at school, and therefore the foods consumed at school contribute
significantly to the overall quality of their diet. Eating a balanced breakfast every
morning is one of the simplest things that can be done to ensure students’ bodies
and brains are receiving the vital nutrients they need. Nutrition impacts cognitive
performance and much of the research in this area has shown links to the benefits
of breakfast consumption .
Well-nourished children and youth are better prepared to learn, be active, and
maintain their overall health and wellness. Schools can positively impact students’
long term physical and mental health by teaching and modeling healthy eating
habits and behaviors as well as engaging students in food and nutrition education.
