Whole child development
in the Teach For All network:
the impact of Teach
For Nigeria fellows
ABSTRACT
Teach For All and Teach For Nigeria (TFN) are partnering with the
RAND Corporation to conduct the orst quasi-experimental study of the
Teach For All network approach to whole child development (WCD)
through ongoing training and coaching of new teachers. The study
investigates multiple facets of whole child outcomes, including mastery
of foundational literacy, maths and social and emotional skills that are
priortized by the TFN program and local education authorities, and
school level factors that contribute to WCD.
In the 2021-2022 academic year, the TFN program was successful
in improving foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Students in
classrooms taught by TFN fellows scored approximately 0.11 standard
deviations higher in mathematics and 0.07 standard deviations
higher in literacy compared to students in the comparison group. The
qualitative ondings indicate parent and peer teachers9 perceptions
of progress in terms of student behaviour and socio-emotional
development; however, the quantitative impact study did not ond
evidence that social and emotional skills improved differentially between
TFN and non-TFN students. The study will continue during the
2022-2023 academic year to better understand the two-year effect of
TFN fellows to create conducive environments for WCD.
