Thunderhole
Creek
Conservation Easement
10 Acres
In 2023, Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina
worked with a private landowner in the Globe area
of Caldwell County to protect their property in
perpetuity, by purchasing the development rights and
placing a conservation easement on the property
that is held and stewarded by FCNC.
Although relatively small in size compared to many
of the conservation transactions by FCNC, this nineacre property holds extraordinary conservation
value. It occupies the connuence of Thunderhole
Creek and the Johns River, and is bordered by Pisgah
National Forest.
Located just three miles south of FCNC9s Johns River
Headwaters project in Blowing Rock, NC, the nine-acre
project scores exceptionally well in the North Carolina
Natural Heritage Program9s biodiversity model (9 out
of 10 along Thunderhole Creek), protects several rare
species and is near the Mills Knob Natural Area.
The landowner, who is a committed conservationist,
wanted nothing more than to see this property
protected in perpetuity.
