THE DETECTIVES - TEACHER’S GUIDE - Unit 2
Vocabulary Reinforcement
Have the students go over the text and find the words they just learned. Ask them to read the
sentences where they found the words. If there are still unclear words, explain them. Have the
students copy the words into their notebooks and write their definitions.
For weaker students: Have them copy the sentence with the new word into their notebooks, next
to the definition they wrote. This will help them remember the context as well.
For more ideas, go to pages vi and vii in the Yellow Pages section.
Reading
Have the students read a few frames at a time and ask questions.
Frames 1-3
Ask:
How do Tom and Kate feel about Lakeview winning? (excited; this is a new
vocabulary word, so it’s important to make sure the students understand it)
What is the bad news from last night? (Another bike was stolen.)
Frames 4-6
What was strange? (This is also a new word – Kate recognized the man as the
green-faced guy who was walking in the wrong direction to the stadium.)
When did they see the man in a picture? (MoCa printed this picture when
they were at Professor Sparky’s workshop)
What do people buy at halftime? (drinks or popcorn)
Frames 6-8
How do you think the man suddenly got a scar on his arm? (Accept all logical
answers.)
Could he be a suspect? (Accept all logical answers without giving away the
answer.)
After Reading
Ask:
What do you think happened at the game?
Do you think we have some important clues here? (Accept all logical answers
– encourage the focus on the man with the scar as something to think
about.)
