Before reading
Have the students look at the comic strip.
Say and ask:
Look at the new words in the box.
Look for the words in the comic strip.
When you find a new word, raise your hand and read the sentence with the word.
Ask:
What do you think the word means? (explain all the words as the students find them)
Reading
Say:
We are going to read the comic strip, one frame at a time.
Frame 1
Who is worried about being late? (Tom)
Frame 2
Why is this game so important? (It’s the final game between Lakeview and Greenville.)
Appreciation of language and culture
NOTE: Point out that the name of the rival town is Greenville. Remind them that you discussed the
notion of making up names based on what there is in the town. Ask the students what they think is
most common in the town of Greenville. Ask what two words make up the name of the town –
"green" and "ville". Explain that "ville" is short for village and is really a French word that was
adopted into English. Ask if they know of any naming conventions in their culture.

What’s the biggest problem here? (the traffic jam)
Why is there so much traffic? (Everyone is going to the game.)
Frame 4
What was Dad’s idea? (to go another way that he knows)
Frame 5
Why is everyone here in green? (It’s the team color.)
Frame 6
Why does Kate say “That’s strange.”? (The boy is going in the opposite direction from the
stadium.)
Frame 7:
How do we know that Tom and Kate are fans of the Lakers and are excited to go to the
game? (They say "Go, Lakers!")
