5. Language Focus: Present Progressive (page 17)
Ask:
Curriculum:
AL: Students will compare different
language elements of English, such
as tense and gender, to their
mother tongue.
What do you see in the pictures? (Tom is jumping, Kate
is taking a picture.)
What tense is this? (Present Progressive)
What do you already know about the Present
Progressive? (At this point, find out what the students remember.)
Add:
We use the Present Progressive to talk about actions that are taking place now, or very
soon.
Some of the time expressions we use with the Present Progressive are "now", "right now",
"at the moment", "today", "soon".
Go over the examples in the book, reviewing all the elements of the conjugation of the tense.
Explain:
To form the Present Progressive, we need a helping verb (an auxiliary verb). The helping
verb helps the main verb, the action verb, to say what is happening in the sentence.
Our helping verb in the Present Progressive is the verb ‘to be’. (Write this on the board.)
Ask and say:
Who remembers how we form the verb ‘to be’? (Write: I am, you are, he is, she is, it is, we
are, they are).
Now look at the examples. What else do we have in the sentence? (the main verb and the
addition of the ‘ing’)
This is how we get the sentences in the examples.
